1.3.19 “When He is with me, it is May all year round, and my soul goes forth to wash its happy face in the morning-dew of His grace...” Charles Spurgeon (excerpt from the devotional “Morning by Morning”) 🌞 For me, winter isn’t a pleasant time of the year. I can stand the cold, bleak look of everything for only a few weeks, but when January comes I long for sunshine and greenery. Yesterday, to pass the time as the rain poured down outside, I grabbed my journals from the past two years; looking back over two years of growth, of joy, of prayer, of heartache. I came across the quote above and I was reminded of His faithfulness - in every season. He is constant. In these months of cold and dreariness, He warms my heart and comforts my spirit. I can always trust in Him to be here, to be my guiding Light and strength. He is with us in every season we pass through; in every hardship and trial, He is there. Let us rejoice in that today - that our God is so, so loving and faithful. j. w.
1.1.19 “God gives us material for sacrifice. Sometimes the sacrifice makes little sense to others, but when offered to Him is always accepted. What was the “point” in God’s asking Abraham for the sacrifice of his beloved son, Isaac? The story had often been attacked as “pagan” and has been grossly misunderstood. Our offerings to Him may very likely be seen as senseless or even fanatical, but He receives them. Jesus received the precious ointment from the worshiping woman, although those present thought it a foolish waste. It is a lesson I understood very dimly in 1948, but it has become clearer and clearer the further I go with God. I have tried to explain it sometimes to people who are lonely and longing for love. “Give it to Jesus,” I say. The loneliness itself is material for sacrifice. The very longings themselves can be offered to Him who understands perfectly. The transformation into something He can use for the good of others takes place only when the offering is put into His hands. What will He do with these offerings? Never mind. He knows what to do.” (Elisabeth Elliot, from her book “Passion and Purity”) Going into this new year, I have a question to ask of myself and of you all. What do we need surrender to the Lord? What do we have that we are struggling through, that is consuming us, that we are holding on to? I pray that we will let go of whatever is holding us captive, and surrender it into the hands of our Lord; the Holder of our hearts. I pray for strength and a spirit of commitment, that we may daily go to the foot of the cross and surrender up ourselves. (See Hillsong’s song, “I Surrender”) j. w.
9.27.18 O Love, that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee; I give Thee back the life I owe, That in Thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be. George Matheson
