Walking With Him

It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe – the creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor – loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. {Francis Chan}

Many Christians know the verses. They know the songs. They know the right words to say, and all the popular Christian phrases.

But they do not know Him.

Oh, how that saddens the Father’s heart. For He calls us to walk with Him, to be taught by Him, to grow in Him. But many of us have shallow minds; and empty hearts. A walk with Him is not merely reading the daily email devotional and then forgetting it after you click away. It’s not mindlessly singing song lyrics in church. It isn’t empty.

What does it look like to truly walk with Him?

It’s a commitment. It’s an intimate relationship. It’s a process. It’s dying to yourself every morning and taking up the cross of Jesus. It’s a holy slow dance, a song sung by the morning bird. Fulfilling. Holy. A fire burning ever so brightly in your soul. It is the raging sea, and the rippling brook. The hurricane and the summer breeze, all in one.

How might we walk to the beat of this sacred song?

You let the Truth touch the most secret parts of your heart. You apply Truth without compromise. This is such a struggle, especially for me. The flesh indeed wants what it wants. For me, a teenage girl, the pull of the world is strong. From the way I dress, to the music I listen to, to the company I keep, the world has an alternative to God. But we are called to have a new nature, to walk on a new path – and God promises to give us the strength. Why would I want the empty pleasures around me when God has something so much more glorious in His plan for me?

I’ve come to Him countless times in the past month, saying, “God, I admit it. I want these worldly things. I want to dress a little differently. I want to have a relationship. But Lord I know you have better things in store for me than the world can ever offer. Give me the strength to move past these temptations – to resist the devil, that he will flee from me. Help me not to want these things, but instead, to want You.”

One of the best things I’ve ever learned is being honest with the Lord. He knows my heart – why should I try to hide its secrets from Him? Be real with Him, sister. He will give you the strength to overcome.

Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. {Ephesians 4:22-23}

We are also called to dwell with Him daily. Read His words, pray messy prayers, and soak in the Truth. However, every relationship with God is different – so it makes sense if you draw closer to Him in a different way than others. Some girls I know watch devotional videos online, while others do devotionals from a book. Some enjoy reading their Bible out in the sunshine, while others would rather read it in their room with a candle nearby. Some focus better with music, some get distracted by it. There’s more than one option. I’ve found that I love reading through Scripture with a highlighter and journal beside me – highlighting my favorite verses and writing down whatever comes to mind while reading.

Remember, we are honored to be able to spend time with Him.

God didn’t have to create us. He didn’t have to save us. He didn’t have to love us. And He definitely doesn’t have to put up with us every day.

Yet He does, because of the holiest, purest love. I pray that we won’t forget that.

O LORD, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. {Psalm 26:8}

I don’t have it all figured out. I’m not walking in the holiest way or singing the purest song. I’m still growing, changing, and figuring things out. But take my hand, sister. For while we are in different parts of our walk, we’re all in this together. Chasing Him together. Seeking out His truth together. We are not alone in this race.

Therefore, do not lose heart. But take these truths and day by day focus on them. Preach them to yourself every morning. Get alone with God and preach his word into your mind until your heart sings with confidence that you are new and cared for. {Unknown}

He is calling you, sweet friend. How will you respond?

Much love,

Jessi
